Inherit the Wind

“How quickly they can turn. And how painful it can be when you don’t expect it.”

One of the important aspects of Inherit the Wind is getting not just the “courtroom drama” feel right, but the sense of the trial’s impact on the small Tennessee community in which it occurs. In both designing and staging the piece, the presence of Hillsboro’s conservatism and tradition was emphasized, with a whole bustling downtown surrounding our cut-away courthouse and characters making entrances from all over the space. The characters who are “convinced” during the action of the play exited the stage – leaving Brady and Cates and Drummond, the three men who are battling their own pre-conceived notions, to make up their own minds, on their own.
